'Majority of Americans' support Biden's decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan

Cypress College Political Science Professor Peter Mathews says “the majority” of Americans support US President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw the troops from Afghanistan.

Professor Mathews said it was a “big tragedy” Afghanistan does not seem to be in a better place after the years of involvement from the United States.

“The thing is the Afghan government had 20 years to get it together and fight corruption in its own midst, which could have actually helped them build a really positive infrastructure, build a positive society that would have been based on democracy and democratic values,” he told Sky News.

“Right now, 20 years is too much already and President Biden [has said] every year is an extra year that’s not needed, and more people die.

“I think the US should be available to support economically from the outside, but not have troops there fighting.

“I think Biden’s probably making the right decision, at least most Americans feel that, the majority do support this particular action of Biden’s.”
