Indian Army to acquire 100+ Sky Striker kamikaze drones for surgical strikes

The world has witnessed the war between Armenia & Azerbaijan. The extensive use of drones was the main reason Azerbaijan won and the Armenian infantry was a more like sitting duck fried by the drone attack. China & Pakistan has also been increasing their fleet of drones; however, India is no Armenia. The drones can be useful for only intelligence gathering, surveillance & reconnaissance. In combat they can be used only where there are minimal to no air defence. In contrary, India has layered air defence system from short range to long range and very soon S400 will be added to our inventory. However, there is one special type of drone that India needs badly and it's a loitering munitions drone. A loitering munition also known as a suicide drone or kamikaze drone is a weapon system category in which the munition loiters around the target area for some time, searches for targets, and attacks once a target is located. These drones can be used for many tactical operations even in an area guarded heavily via air defence systems. Their small size and large number can overwhelm & saturate the air defence systems rendering them either empty or useless. They can be used in SEAD - Suppression of Enemy Air Defence along with Rafales & BrahMos. Apart from that, the loitering munitions can be nightmare for tanks, infantry & artilleries. Now coming to today’s update, The Indian Army has contracted the JV between Bengaluru-based Alpha Design Technologies & Israel’s Elbit systems for the supply of 100+ units of the SkyStriker Loitering Munition. Elbit Systems’ SkyStriker is a cost-effective loitering munition that is capable of long-range precise tactical strikes. The technology-enabled SkyStriker improves performance, situational awareness and survivability by providing direct-fire aerial-precision capabilities to maneuverable troops and Special Forces. SkyStriker is a fully autonomous UAS that can locate, acquire and strike operator-designated targets with a 5kg warhead installed inside the fuselage, enabling high-precision performance. It can reach a target area located 20 km away within 10 minutes. It has dual seeker with day & night capability. The UAS’ electric propulsion offers a minimal acoustic signature, allowing covert operations at low altitude operations. It can also carry armour piercing munition to destroys tanks. It has 360 degree attack capability. The UAS has endurance of upto 2hrs & has autonoumus navigation during cruising & loitering phase. It can track the targets in both day & night using its high quality camera and it can abort its mission at last moment if needed. The best part is it can be recovered and safely landed and reused later.
