These are the Top 5 reasons to choose High deductible Plan G.
January 1, 2020... Medicare came out with Medicare Supplement High deductible plan G.
If you are within 6 months of turning 65 or going onto Medicare for the first time… Please watch and take notes. This should simplify the process for you.
#1. Low premium but High benefits
Medicare High deductible plan G usually has a premium of about $40-$80 per month. The Plan G premium can range from $150-$300 a month in most states. (Depending on your age, etc)
You get the same benefits with the High deductible Plan G as you do with the regular Plan G. This gives you some peace of mind knowing you have the most comprehensive Medigap plan offered.
You can go to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. You don't have to worry about referrals or not being accepted.
#2. The high deductible shouldn't be that scary. The deductible you must pay is $2,370 for 2021. My estimate is it will be $2,600 for the year 2025.
The high deductible is only paid for the portion that Medicare Part A and B don't pick up. If you go to the doctor's office and the bill is $100, Medicare will pick up their portion (around 80%) and you will have to pay $20 towards your deductible.
Also… If your premium for the Medicare high deductible Plan G is $50 a month (hypothetically). Your max out of pocket for doctor and hospital visits for the year would be $2970 in 2021…
If you had a heart attack, stroke and brain surgery all in one year… the most you would pay would be $50 x 12= $600 in premiums and $2370 for the high deductible. $2970 for the year. This is a pay as you go plan.
#3. Most people who are turning 65 are healthy
If you are healthy and only go to the doctor for checkups, physicals and screenings. This might be the plan for you.
For someone who is healthy… They could easily save $50-$100 a month with this plan but still have the benefits. Over 5 or 10 years this can be significant.
You can always switch to a regular Plan G or a Plan N if you are healthy and don't like the high deductible (but you must pass underwriting)
#4. You are in a Medigap plan Vs a Medicare advantage plan
Some people do not want to be in a Medicare advantage plan. For whatever reason, they want a Medigap plan and can't stand the advantage plans.
The High Deductible Plan G is a great option for someone who doesn't want an upfront cost like most of the Medigap plans but also doesn't want an advantage plan.
#5. You're turning 65 or enrolling in Medicare for the first time and want to try a Medigap plan.
There are zero health questions when applying for a Medicare advantage plan. On the other hand, Medigap plans do. Medicare supplement High deductible plan G will ask health questions to accept you into the plan.
It is smart to test out a Medigap plan when you first are eligible for Medicare because if you go straight into an advantage plan… you may never see a Medigap plan if you get sick.
