Happy Thursday, which means you know we’ve got to talk about the current state of the US economy and unemployment rates across America in this week’s jobs report from the Department of Labor.
This week's jobs report showed some decent news for the economy and unemployment rate, as they were higher than last week’s numbers and underperformed the estimates of the DOW Jones economists.
The weekly report showed that 362,000 Americans filed their first-time unemployment claims, which is higher than the previous week’s 335,000 revised initial claims, and higher than the estimates from the DOW Jones who predicted 335,000 unemployment claims.
Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics explained: “Claims likely won’t return to their previous lows until mid-October. After that, the downward trend should resume as economic activity revs back up post-Delta.”
Meanwhile, the great state of Wisconsin recently announced that they are looking to spend upwards of $90 million to update their antiquated unemployment system.
According to the Wisconsin State Journal: “Federal funds are being used to pay for the entire computer upgrade project, which the state Department of Workforce Development estimates will cost about $90 million.”
The state hopes to solve the problem of long delays in the processing of unemployment claims that led to some people having to wait months to get their disaster relief stimulus unemployment checks.
Department Secretary Amy Pechacek said: “other changes to the unemployment process include updated call centers, and a virtual career center.”
Finally, with the government shutdown poised to occur at midnight tonight, millions of government funded jobs could be in limbo starting tomorrow if no disaster relief employment stimulus bill is passed.
According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB): “Many national parks would likely shut down, while mortgage and other loan applications could be delayed because the IRS could stop verifying income and Social Security numbers.”
Government services that are deemed essential — typically tasks important to safety and national security, such as border protection and air traffic control — would continue despite a shutdown.
Marc Goldwein, senior policy director at the CRFB stated: "Every shutdown is different — there is a lot of discretion in the agencies about what they can continue to do. Everything that's not essential has to stop, but there are different definitions of essential work."
If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, do yourself a favor and apply today.
In most states these is still time to claim state unemployment benefits by visiting your local UI website, uploading your employment history and ID, and filling out the application as genuinely as possible and to the best of your abilities.
For honestly and truthfully answering all provided questions, you could receive a backdated unemployment check for thousands of dollars.
At this point in time, the PUA remains closed, but I remain hopeful that our lawmakers can provide new fiscal support through unemployment funds to the gig-workers, self employed, independent contractors, 1099 workers, even side hustlers, volunteers and freelancers out there.
