NIOB urged the Lagos State government to strictly enforce its physical planning regulations

On Thursday, 5th of November, 2021 the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIoB) urged the Lagos State government to strictly enforce its physical planning regulations to reduce the number of building collapses in the state.
At a news conference on the fallen 21-story building on Gerrard Road in Ikoyi, Lagos, the institute made the announcement.

While expressing condolences to the victims' families and the state government, the Institute's Lagos Chapter Chairman, Mr. Lucky Isename, said the state had good laws that were not being implemented properly.

While identifying the reasons for building collapse, Isename stated that the state has wonderful legislation that must be enforced as soon as possible to prevent construction disasters.
"To avert building collapse in Lagos State, we require the Lagos State administration to rigorously execute the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority legislation," he stated.
To provide quality assurance in building production processes, he advocated for the involvement of competent builders and other accredited built environment specialists in all projects.
According to Onadipe, specialists in the built environment are frequently marginalized, and "builders are irritated" that sections of the regulations requiring them to be present on every construction site are ignored.
