So, we just got the new teaser trailer for Pixar upcoming project Lightyear based on the guy in the toy story universe that Buzz Lightyear is a toy of. I’ll be giving you a trailer breakdown with all the Pixar easter eggs and all Disney references -
So, there’s a really quick shot of Buzz’s dog tags here which reads Buzz Lightyear and also reads his blood type as O Positive the last time we saw any reference to o positive in general was back in Pixar’s earlier projects with A Bug’s Life where a mosquito orders an o positive drink
You can see behind his shirt that it reads Star Command being one of the biggest parts of Buzz Lightyear’s past in toy story
You can see here that this says Cell 03 on the power source for Lightyear’s spaceship which means it could foreshadow that we will see at least three other space rangers in the movie - a plotpoint that was introduced at the end of the trailer
It says on the dash here IVAN which could be an A.I. that Lightyear works with throughout the film - possibly this robot later
You can see here that the hologram on the dash actually documents his mission that we see in the trailer when he slingshots himself around the sun and through the three rings all that we saw on the hologram - you can see the robot later taking Buzz through the mission on the whiteboard as well
We get an aerial shot of his spaceship which is a lot different than the spaceship packaging he comes in as a toy
This lady here is named Izzy Hawthorne, she’s the space ranger we see at the end of the trailer, it seems like since Buzz is not in his usual uniform, then he’s some kind of pilot to begin with then Hawthorne makes him a space ranger after the mission is over- passing whatever test he’s given here
It’s right here that you can see his badge or the symbol we see on his usual uniform, since he is not yet a space ranger, I’m gonna say it’s the symbol of the galactic alliance that Buzz was talking about in toy story
This moment here between the robot and buzz, the planet they are on is almost a direct callback to dagobah the planet in star wars where luke skywalker visits master yoda, look you even have the jet here looking like Luke’s x-wing on dagobah, that’s a really cool star wars reference - and it’s a space movie, I’d be surprised if they didn’t have star wars references considering disney owns both pixar and star wars
It looks like they have elements of toy story in this movie, even having the toy cat of his talk to him and that’s why he gets all freaked out - remember this takes place in toy story universe, so toys are sentient creatures
Buzz Lightyear reaction though to the cat talking is the same way buzz reacts to anyone when he gets agitated, he always prepares for the worst by getting ready to fight someone
You can see his mission will feel like 4 minutes to him, but 4 years to the world he left behind that’s what these arrows side by side mean, and so that means buzz will be coming home to what could be a whole new world to him later in the movie and that will be an interesting concept for him to deal with, almost like being a fish out of water
In the full shot of his test pilot uniform, you can see his three different coloured buttons which is a reference to the three different coloured buttons he has on his usual outfit
You can see Buzz get pulled by this vine creature, so there will be creatures throughout the film that buzz lightyear will have to face on the different planets that he goes to
We get a full shot of Buzz Lightyear’s classic suit right here, hard to miss that one
We get the to infinity and teaser for the classic to infinity and beyond line that buzz is most known for
You can actually see on Buzz’s arm here that he doesn’t have the laser that he does on his toy, meaning that was an addition to the toy - because on the toy, he has the laser on his right arm, but in this full shot, there is no laser - that’s not to say he can’t get it later in the film, but he just doesn’t have it now
But, to close out the trailer they make a space movie reference with the two fingertips touching - a reference to ET where they do the same
Lastly, the trailer song you hear is David Bowie singing his song Starman which goes without saying that it matches that Buzz Lightyear is the star man
