He was all of 24 years old, had his entire life and career ahead of him but it all met with a dreadful end, yesterday, when Ashok Pal - a final year MBBS student of the Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College & Hospital at Yavatmal in Maharashtra, was allegedly murdered.

But what exactly happened?

According to Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors or Central MARD he was stabbed and brutally murdered in cold blood yesterday when he was walking back to his hostel from the library at around 8pm. They claim if proper security was provided by the college administration, Ashok would have been alive. Demanding immediate justice for Ashok, they asked for adequate mesaures for hostile environment in all medical colleges.

The doctors from MARD have launched agitation in the college premises demanding detailed investigation into the incident, including motive of the attack, which is still shrouded in mystery.

The murder led to agitation by the doctors at the college campus, forcing the college's dean, Dr Milind Kamble to resign from the post.
MARD president of the college, Dr Anup Saha, said, Another incident took place two months ago, wherein some outsiders barged into the girls’ hostel and peed there. When we objected, it led to a fight. We suspect the same people are behind this attack too.

As per Ashok's fellow medical students, trusted sources and news reports, Ashok Pal and others had a fight with some of these miscreants, who had been harassing the girls from the hostel and there was a huge quarrel back in August. An FIR was also filed but the issue was "settled" amicably back then. However, many believe that it was this same issue that eventually led to Ashok's killing. Police said they are looking for another accused

The police have arrested two suspects - 21 year old Akash Gophne, and 24 year old Tushar Nagdevte from Waghapur, which is 500 kms away from the GMC medical college. They were produced in court and have been remanded to police custody till 15th Nov.

Ashok's uncle, Dr Sanjay Pal, said, "Ashok was a dedicated student. He wanted to be a doctor to serve society. His father is an auto driver in Thane and mother does odd jobs to support his studies. It was just a matter of a few months, till he completed the course.” However, some reports claim that his father died 10 years back due to brain hemmorage and Ashok was the only one supporting his mother, who is a housewife and younger siblings.

The son of late Vilasrao Deshmukh and Cabinet Minister Amit Deshmukh has taken serious note of the incident and spoke with the SP and district collector, asking them to take action against the culprits.
