Why the Dentec NxMD is still my go to source control respirator when combined with the P100 filters.
If you’ve seen my previous videos about the Dentec N95 cartridges you might think it odd that the Dentec NxMD is still the mask I use most often. As I explain in this video, it’s because I’ve tested the NxMD mask and the P100 filter cartridges with a particle counting mask fit tester. The testing showed that the NxMD seals very well on my face and the P100s filter well.
In this video I compare the NxMD to other NIOSH source control respirators and point out some of the similarities and differences.
*Dentec NxMD with P100 Filters*
Quantitative mask fit testing with a particle counter indicates this mask seals very well on me and filters well. The NxMD is a simple mask that feels a bit low end in some ways, but it is comfortable and the seal is soft and forgiving. The P100s seem a bit easier to breathe through than my 3M P100s, and I prefer the Dentec P100s them over the white Dentec N95 cartridges that I think could be improved, especially the black N95s which are opaque and can't be visually inspected when assembled.
*GVS Elipse Source Control*
Easy to get. Unforgiving seal leaks for some at the chin. I can't recommend this mask unless you have access to fit testing to confirm it seals well on you, including when moving your face.
*3M 6000 Series with Optional 604 Exhalation Filter for Source Control*
This light weight valved mask fits me well, but it feels harder to breathe through the 3M P100 filters than the Dentec P100s. It can be more difficult and more expensive to source all the components needed to assemble the mask with all the filters than with some other respirators because of the minimum quantities some components are sold in and because some of the parts aren't as common.
*MSA Advantage 900 with Voice Diaphragm*
A good mask, with odd sizing. The large size is wider rather instead taller than the medium size. The voice diaphragm is a feature missing from 3M's only elastomeric source control respirator option, the 6000 Series with the 604 Exhalation Filter, and from all other NIOSH source control half masks I'm aware of. The MSA Advantage is expensive to acquire because of the cost of the mask and the minimum quantity of 2 pair of filters when purchased from the vendor I bought from.
