Desperate mothers threw babies over barbed wire at Kabul airport as troops set off stun grenades and fired shots to keep crowds back as the west's Afghan withdrawal descended further into chaos. British defence secretary Ben Wallace insisted this morning that westerners were being allowed through Taliban security encircling the airport and that UK planes are not leaving half-empty, after reports emerged that almost everybody was being blocked from getting to the terminal. He also pleaded with people not to pass infants to troops, saying unaccompanied babies would not be put on planes out. At least 12 people have died at the airport since Sunday, according to the Taliban which has taken charge of security, saying they were either shot or tramped while urging crowds to disperse. 'We don't want to hurt anybody,' a spokesman said today.
