Tesla CEO, Elon Musk: "University Degree is NOT an Evidence of Exceptional Ability!" #shorts

During a fireside discussion at the Satellite 2020 conference on Monday, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk discussed college. During the audience Q&A, Musk was asked how universities and industries might make college more affordable for students while also increasing access for underprivileged kids.

Musk stated that "you don't need a college degree to learn something," and that knowledge is essentially free. He characterized college as a series of "annoying homework assignments," and stated that one of the key benefits of attending college is spending time with people your own age before entering the workforce.

Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla, believes that individuals "don't need the education to understand stuff" and that work at his companies should not require a degree.

“Did Shakespeare go to college?” he asked. “Probably not.”

An audience member told Musk at the Satellite 2020 conference in Washington DC on Monday that many job postings at his company SpaceX require a bachelor's degree and say a master's degree is preferred – despite Musk's previous statements about not requiring a college degree for jobs at his companies.

“With more jobs asking for higher levels of degrees,” the audience member said, “scholarships are not changing amounts and it’s getting harder and harder every year to pay tuition, even with using scholarships. How can college and industries make it easier to afford college?”

Musk said that college was unneeded since "you can learn anything you want for free."

The main value of education, he claims, is in demonstrating discipline by completing "annoying homework tasks" and socializing with people your age before entering the business.

He also stated that he hopes to ensure that his electric car firm, Tesla, does not require university degrees for employment, "because that's crazy." According to him, the fundamental criterion for employment at his companies is "extraordinary skill."

“I don’t consider going to college evidence of exceptional ability,” Musk said. “In fact, ideally you dropped out.”

Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Larry Ellison are among the "brilliant guys" who dropped out of college, according to Musk. He also made a reference to Shakespeare, who was, in fact, the son of a glover who received just a grammar school education.

Musk has previously stated that prestigious university degrees are overrated. On Twitter in January, he responded "Yes" when asked if he didn't require potential employees to have a college degree. In a 2014 interview with the German automotive journal Auto Bild, he cited Gates, Jobs, and Ellison as successful examples of dropouts. Musk, for his part, has a prestigious degree. He attended Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, for two years before moving to the University of Pennsylvania, where he got degrees in physics and economics. (In 2019, he revealed that he graduated with approximately $100,000 in school debt.)

Musk, on the other hand, dropped out of a PhD program at Stanford University after only two days in California, instead of launching his first firm, Zip2. It clearly paid off: when Zip2 was sold to Compaq in 1999, he received $22 million.
